The 6 best albums from Impulse
John Coltrane / Ballad
Sonny Rollins / On Impulse
Roy Haynes / Out of the Afternoon
Oliver Nelson / The Truth About the Blues
Count Basie / Kansas City Seven
John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
These six titles are reissues of six historic modern jazz albums recorded by the great Rudy Van Gelder during the active period of analog stereo recording from 1961 to 1965.
The label “Impulse” is one that accurately depicts the jazz scene of the turbulent early 1960s.
It was launched in 1961 as a jazz label under the major American label ABC Paramount, with the slogan “The New Wave of Jazz”, and was actively involved in cutting-edge performances by John Coltrane and others who stormed through the 1960s like a hurricane.
it also worked hard to discover new talent and to promote the performances of established superstars, and it established a firm position as a label that accurately captured the trends in jazz in the United States.
The six albums we have chosen here are a diverse collection that symbolizes the jazz of the early 1960s, when the label was first established.
Coltranes performance on this album is not the aggressive playing he was known for, but rather a beautifully sung ballad, which is one of his more attractive aspects. All of the albums on this list have received excellent reviews for both their sound quality and their performances.
1.John Coltrane / Ballads [ESSI-90133
The world of Coltrane was completed through an important relationship that could not be broken between Impulse and Coltrane.
This album “Ballads” was one of the ambitious attempts to bring out the appeal of Coltrane, who was both difficult and transcendent, from multiple angles.

This is a disc that reminds us that Sonny Rollins is always the best.

A true jazz drummer legend!
Even on this album, Roy Haynes has created a solid, well-structured jazz album without featuring the magnificent playing that can be seen in other albums led by drummers, and this is exactly what you would expect from Roy Haynes.

4.Oliver Nelson / The Truth About the Blues [ESSI-90136
There are four wind instruments.
Even so, the arrangements give the impression of a full band, and there are many highlights to be found on every track, such as the interaction between the wind instruments and the piano solo by Bill Evans, who appears after Freddie Hubbard in “Cascades”.

5.Count Basie / Kansas City Seven [ESSI-90137]
On this disc, Count Basie adopts a combo format of 1 trumpet, 2 saxophones and a rhythm section, rather than his usual large-scale orchestra.
The appeal of the rhythm section, which always features the guitar, piano, bass and drums that make up the Basie Orchestra, is brought into even sharper relief by the smaller ensemble.

And the fact that Coltranes tenor saxophone conveys the excellence of the music as he performs a duo with Hartman is a triumph of the project, and a rare work even in jazz history.
The opening song, “They Say Its Wonderful”, and the third song, “My One and Only Love”, are vocal works that will be listened to for the next half century, or a total of 100 years.
